I aspire to be one of those journalists with multiple Emmy awards lining the windowsill of my office but somehow the transition into independent journalism makes me feel like I am moving away from achieving that goal. To not lose sight of my dreams I hold on to the two times my coverage was nominated. Once by the Southwest chapter and most recently in 2017 by the Midwest chapter.
The coverage below is a piece I did three months after my first job as a multi-media TV reporter, so you can only imagine how utterly surprised I was to be nominated for an Emmy. I had just transitioned into news after seven years of working as a radio broadcaster. The Emmy nomination three months in felt like a sign of a promising career and for that reason I continue pressing forward despite the obstacles I’ve been presented.
