Demario Reid, brother of Jamar Clark who was killed by police in 2015, is facing potentially life-threatening injuries following a collision involving a police officer last Saturday night. The incident took place around 9:30pm at the intersection of 28th and Central Ave NE. Demario was riding his motorcycle at the time of the collision.
The Minneapolis Police Department is currently accused of violating State law statue 13.82 by withholding case details, including the officer's name according to the family's attorney Paul Bosman. He says it’s critical to know who the involved officer is considering the family's history with MPD.
While public footage of the accident is unavailable, Reid's family was allowed to privately review approximately 30 seconds of dash cam footage and claims it contradicts police statements published by local media outlets.
Initially, police claimed Demario was under the influence during the crash, but Hennepin County Medical Center staff informed the family that his toxicology results were clean.
"My son was not at fault and shouldn't be fighting for his life right now," said Irma, Demario's mother.
Demario's mother and siblings are demanding the public release of all footage, the name of the officer, the release of his belongings, and explanation why the family wasn’t notified by authorities after the crash.
Tiffany, Demario's sister, says he was listed at HCMC as John Doe for nearly a week despite police knowing his identity. The family had no idea he was in a crash or in the hospital until five days after the accident, when DeMario regained consciousness, remembering a relative's number and informing them himself.
As of now, Demario's condition is stable. This is a developing story, and updates will follow as new information emerges.
